Can I dye hair during pregnancy?

Updated: Apr 24, 2019

Getting bored and thinking to change your hair color. Is it safe for baby?

The chemicals in certain hair dyes may be toxic. Some studies suggest that high doses of the chemicals in hair dyes may cause harm. However, these doses are massive compared with the minuscule amount of chemicals exposed when colouring hair.

Few studies do show that it's safe to colour your hair while pregnant as only small amounts of hair dye may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little amount to affect the fetus. And it may be excreted fairly soon. But evidence is very weak.

Exposure to hair dye and hair straightening lotion may result in scalp absorption of chemicals into the bloodstream. Unfortunately, there are only few studies on the safety of these products during pregnancy. Thus, I would advise against dyeing or rebonding once you conceived.
