Pregnancy striae, AKA stretch marks, make many mothers worry during and after pregnancy. These marks typically appear as thin streaks and may be red, purple, or white. They can develop on your tummy, breast, hips, or thighs.
Striae occur due to hormonal changes and the rapid stretching and shrinking of the skin as your body accommodates your growing baby. And it is worse for twins or big baby. Other causes include nutritional deficiencies (such as vitamin C and E, zinc), and genetic predisposition.
While they are harmless, many mothers seek ways to prevent or minimise striae through varies skincare routines and treatments.

Ways to prevent striae during pregnancy
Moisturise daily – look out for creams such as cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil, jojoba oil, or hyaluronic acid which help to keep the skin hydrated and maintain elasticity
Healthy lifestyle- stay hydrated and have a balanced diet rich in vitamin C and E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids to support skin health. Exercise regularly to boost circulation and promote skin elasticity
Adopt a gradual weight gain approach – aim for a steady and gradual increase in weight during pregnancy (10-12 kg in pregnancy). Consult your doctor for personalised weight gain goals based on individual
Use sunscreen – protecting the skin from sun exposure can prevent damage and promote overall skin health
Ways to reduce appearance of stria postpartum
Topical treatments
Continue daily moisturisers as maintenance
Retinoid creams: Prescribed retinoid creams improve the striae by promoting collagen production. This is not recommended during breastfeeding.
Vitamin E oil: massage into affected areas to improve skin elasticity
Professional treatments
Laser therapy: stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture
Microdermabrasion: exfoliates the top layer of skin to promote skin renewal
Chemical peel: improves skin texture and reduces pigmentation
Microneedling: creates micro-injuries to stimulate collagen and elastin
Remember that stretch marks are normal part of post-partum changes. Embrace your body’s transformation and be patient as you care for your skin. For personalised advice on treatments, consult a doctor for best outcomes.
