#5 facts to know for your third pregnancy

Updated: Aug 14

Congratulations to the abundant blessings and soon, you and hubby will be outnumbered.

Before the D-day happens, let’s check what to look out in your third pregnancy.

  1. Worsening symptoms of pregnancy

As you grow older, your body needs more time to adjust to the hormonal and physical changes of pregnancy. You feel more exhausted and lack of energy. Nausea, vomiting and poor appetite may worsen in the third pregnancy. Fortunately, these symptoms will resolve in the second trimester when your body copes better. Your body may ache more in third trimester. Remember to get belly and back support to ease the ache.

  1. Screen for Down syndrome

The risk of Down syndrome is higher especially if you hit above 35 years old and the risk is 1 in 250 (0.4%). Do consider non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) which is a genetic blood test to assess the risk. Nuchal translucency (OSCAR test) by ultrasound scan in first trimester is a good alternative too. Please discuss with your doctor.

  1. Risk of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes

These risks are age-related and increases with maternal age. Do consider the screening tests. Low dose aspirin can be taken to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia (hypertension in pregnancy). Control the desserts and sweets as risk of GD is higher.

  1. Weight gain

Watch your diet as your weight may increase more in the third pregnancy. Take less carbs (rice, bread, noodles) and eat more proteins and vegetables. A weight gain of 10-12 kg is healthy for the entire pregnancy if you are average-size.

  1. Expected due date may be earlier

It is common that the baby may arrive earlier and faster! Get prepared earlier and go to the delivery ward once you feel the labour pains. Otherwise, you may end up delivering at home or in the car as labour progresses much quicker for #3.

All the best!
