If you have crooked teeth, you may be wondering if it’s safe to have braces while you’re pregnant. Read on.

Pregnancy Singapore: Braces in pregnancy

Pregnancy will affect the health of your teeth. Whether you are already on braces whilst pregnant or just starting your orthodontic treatment, it’s important to take good care of your braces and oral hygiene. Otherwise, it is perfectly safe to wear braces!

3 must-do orthodontic steps

#1 Maintain good oral hygiene and keep your teeth fresh and clean

#2 Regularly brush and floss your teeth (with your braces on!)

#3 Pregnancy hormones increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease. So go for extra cleansing at your dentist’s clinic at least once in pregnancy.

Pregnancy increases dental diseases

The hormones do affect your oral health. You may experience dry mouth or foul breath due to lesser saliva production. Morning sickness and vomiting expose your teeth to gastric juices which can harm the enamel. Your eating habits change and you may have sweet food cravings that may increase the risk of tooth decay. The progesterone hormone affects tooth movement and loosens the ligaments.

Women wearing braces have no issues if they need C-sections. However, do inform the anesthetist if you are undergoing general anaesthesia so as not to dislodge the braces during intubation of the airway.
