Fishes to avoid in pregnancy

Updated: Apr 24, 2019

"Can I eat fish whilst pregnant?" Many pregnant women asked me this question. Yes, you can but sparingly. You'll need to choose your fish carefully.

Your immune system is weaker in pregnancy. This puts you at risk of infections more easily. Food-borne infections can become more serious during pregnancy and can lead to miscarriage, malformations, preterm labour or even stillbirth.

Food safety is important during pregnancy. Bacterial toxins and harmful chemicals such as alcohol and heavy metals can pass from mother to baby, and cause adverse outcomes. Avoid swordfish, shark, tilefish and king mackerel. Limit canned albacore tuna as well. Eat only 2-3 portions of fish a week.
