Can I have ice cream in pregnancy?

Updated: Apr 24, 2019

Can you eat ice cream when pregnant? That's a burning question.

Dairy intake is important for pregnant women. Dairy foods are good sources of calcium, which helps your baby to form bones. But beware. There are some cheeses and dairy products that should be avoided in pregnancy, as they may make you ill and harm your baby.

Tips: Avoid unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses, e.g. Brie, feta, Camembert and Roquefort; liver pates; and uncooked hot dogs, ham and luncheon meats. These are prone to Listeria germs, a bacteria that causes listeriosis, which can result in miscarriages or even stillbirth.
